A skincare fridge may look aesthetic in an Instagram post, but do you really need it? Let’s find out.
Cute, colourful mini skincare refrigerators are taking over Instagram’s aesthetic posts. The beauty industry seems to have jumped on the bandwagon of keeping skincare products in a mini fridge made for skincare, but turns out, it’s nothing but a scam.
What is it?
A tiny, rectangular box that keeps skincare products cool. That’s the most honest way we could put this definition. It works just like a normal refrigerator but is marketed for skincare. But if it’s just like the regular refrigerators that we have at our homes, then why buy another one? The answer is, you don’t have to because skincare is not meant to be kept in the fridge, except for a few unstable exceptions like vitamin C.
Skincare products go through rigorous testing and temperature is one of the key components they have to pass through. They are designed to work and be stable in various temperatures. Keeping them in a skincare fridge and taking them out twice a day to do your skincare routine may not be a good idea. Constant fluctuation in temperature might mess up with the preservatives that keep your products stable and safe.
Apart from vitamin C, which is advised to be stored in a cool, dark place because of its oxidisation rate, no other skincare product or ingredient needs to be stored in a fridge. If you do like the cooling effect, though, keep aloe vera gel or a toner in your fridge and apply it on a hot, humid day. But other than that, you don’t need a separate fridge for skincare.
